PROFESSOR AVERY’S CORTIZONE-FUELED QUIZ

aka PROFESSOR ED AVERY’S CORTIZONE-FUELED, BIGGER-THAN-LIFE, SUPER BIG GULP-SIZED SUMMER MOVIE QUIZ

Another great quiz by Dennis Cozzalio.

1) DEPENDING ON YOUR MOOD, YOUR FAVORITE OR LEAST-LOVED MOVIE CLICHE
My favorite remains bad guys being terrible shots with guns. Bullets not hitting our hero, etc..
My least favorite is the "Black guy dies first" thing. When genre films treat people of color like expendable fodder

2) REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT YOU EVENTUALLY CAUGHT UP WITH IT, WHICH FILM CLASSIC HAVE YOU LIED ABOUT SEEING IN THE PAST?

In high school I used to tell people I liked Orson Welles's CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (1966) more than CITIZEN KANE (1941). Just to sound cool, contrarian, & learned I guess.. But the thing was that movie hadn't been available for decades & I had never seen it. Wasn't even available to watch on VHS- and Youtube was new and no one had uploaded a bootleg
Not the coolest shit I've ever done.

3) ROLAND YOUNG
OR EDWARD EVERETT HORTON?
Ro Ro.

4) 2ND FAVORITE
           FRANK TASHLIN MOVIE
WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER? (1957)..
My personal favorite is DISORDERLY ORDERLY ('64).

5) CLOCKWORK ORANGE
                     -- YES OR NO?
A big yes.. One of the best adaptations of the 70s

6) BEST/FAVORITE USE OF GENDER DYSPHORIA IN A HORROR FILM

I guess SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983)?
but this tends to be used in a boring or irresponsible way in horror.

7) MELANIE LAURENT
              OR BLAKE LIVELY?
I think Melanie is classically prettier but Blake has more dramatic range in my opinion.

8)
BEST MOVIE OF 2011 (SO FAR...)
Malick's TREE OF LIFE. It may end up being the best film of the 2010s

9) FAVORITE SCREEN PERFORMER WITH A NOTICEABLE FACIAL DEFORMITY

Stacy Keach. A virile beast man who punched us all in the face. And we loved him for it!
cleft lip scar + uneven nostrils

And also Owen Wilson. A unique broken nosey!

10) LARS VON TRIER: SHITHEAD OR MISUNDERSTOOD COMIC SAVANT?

I think you have to be a little bit of both to be at the shock rocker level he is. I remain a fan regardless.

11) TIMOTHY CAREY
                 OR HENRY SILVA?
I love Silva but I feel Carey is one of the most underrated actors of his era.

12)
LOW-PROFILE WRITER
WHO DESERVES MORE ATTENTION FROM CRITICS & OR AUDIENCES
Are we talking writer of film criticism/theory or screenwriter?? If we're talkin' film critics, Simon Abrams is my favorite of the new critics on the scene in my age group.
If the quiz meant screenwriters though-- I think Mia Hansen-Løve is criminally underrated. As both a writer & director.

13) MOVIE MOST RECENTLY VIEWED THEATRICALLY, AND ON DVD, BLURAY OR STREAMING
Theatrically: THE TREE OF LIFE (2011)

dvd: Jodorowsky's SANTA SANGRE (1989)

14) FAVORITE FILM NOIR VILLAIN
Welles as Harry Lime in THE THIRD MAN (1949).

15) BEST THING ABOUT
            STREAMING MOVIES?
Finally catching up with movies that have eluded me for years. Things I never managed to track down at video stores.. Ex. TEARS OF THE BLACK TIGER (2000), Mike Leigh's GROWN UPS (1980), WOLFEN (1981), A FILM UNFINISHED (2010)

16) FAY SPAIN
         OR FRANCE NUYEN?
Nuyen!!

17) FAVORITE KIRK DOUGLAS  MOVIE THAT ISN'T CALLED SPARTACUS

THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL (1952)

18) FAVORITE MOVIE ABOUT CARS
MAD MAX (1979)

19) AUDREY TOTTER
         OR MARIE WINDSOR?
Audrey.

20) EXISTING STEPHEN KING MOVIE ADAPTATION THAT COULD USE A REMAKE/REBOOT/OVERHAUL

I don't like the 1990 miniseries of King's It.. Tim Curry is great in it but that creepy ass book deserved so much better. It should get a new feature film remake! Especially if they just focus on the part where "the Losers" are kids. And if that film does well, green-light a sequel about when they're adults.
Also i think The Stand could make an awesome 2 part movie.

21)
A LOW-PROFILE DIRECTOR
WHO DESERVES MORE ATTENTION FROM CRITICS AND/OR AUDIENCES
Off the top of my head-- Mia Hansen-Løve, Larry Fessenden, So Yong Kim, Rob Zombie, and Gerardo Naranjo.

22) WHAT ACTOR THAT YOU PREVIOUSLY ENJOYED HAS BECOME DISTRACTING OR A SELF-PARDOY?

James Woods

23) BEST PLACE IN THE WORLD TO SEE A MOVIE
My favorite projection, sound system, & overall presentation is the true IMAX in Dallas at Webb Chapel,
but the best theater in the world is the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin TX.. It's like a temple shrine devoted to movies.

24) CHARLES MCGRAW
         OR STERLING HAYDEN?
Sterling Hayden any damn day.

25) 2ND FAVORITE OZU FILM
Of what I've seen, GOOD MORNING ('59).

26) MOST MEMORABLE
    HORROR FATHER FIGURE
Ummm, Jack Torrance. Duh.

27) NAME A NON-ACTION ORIENTED MOVIE THAT WOULD BE FUN TO SEE IN SENSURROUND
Imagine if  BLUE VELVET (1986) turned up the Sensurround/Rumbletron on those hallucinatory slow motion moments. + all the droning, hissing, & surrealist dissolves.. Oh dear.

28) CHRIS EVANS
          OR RYAN REYNOLDS?
Chris. Without hesitation.

29) FAVORITE RELATIVELY UNKNOWN SUPPORTING PLAYER, FROM EITHER OR BOTH THE CLASSIC AND THE MODERN ERA
Stephen Root of the modern era & Dick Miller from the classic period.

30) REAL-LIFE MOVIE LOCATION YOU MOST RECENTLY VISITED OR SAW

The Chapel of Thanksgiving's stained-glass spiral ceiling from TREE OF LIFE (2011)

31) 2ND FAVORITE
   BUDD BOETTICHER MOVIE
of the 2 I've seen; RIDE LONESOME (1959)
coming only after THE TALL T (1957)

32) MARA CORDAY
             OR JULIE ADAMS?
Lordy lord, Julie!

33) FAVORITE UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL WESTERN

Sam Fuller's RUN OF THE ARROW (1957)

34) WHAT'S THE BIGGEST "GIMMICK" THAT'S DRAWN YOU OUT TO SEE A MOVIE?

a ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (1975) sing-a-long they did at the Dallas Inwood.

35) FAVORITE ACTRESS
          OF THE SILENT ERA
Louise Brooks.

36) BEST EUGENE PALLETTE
                     PERFORMANCE
As Friar Tuck in the old ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD ('38).

37) BEST / WORST REMAKE OF THE 21ST CENTURY SO FAR?
Off the top of my head, the best would be OCEAN'S ELEVEN (2001) and TRUE GRIT (2010).
Worst remakes this century are PULSE (2006), NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (2010), & THE HITCHER (2007).

38) WHAT COULD MULTIPLEX OWNERS DO RIGHT NOW TO IMPROVE THE THEATRICAL VIEWING EXPERIENCE FOR MOVIEGOERS? WHAT COULD MOVIEGOERS DO?
Multiplex owners could invest in training traditional projectionists & screen things in 35mm (or 70mm) until digital projectors reach a higher resolution. Don't buy cheap-o projectors just to save a buck. It looks horrible, especially on 3D films. Also always have a staff member on call who can eject disruptive viewers & people playing on their cellphones. Moviegoers could improve cinemas by actually going to more movies & being courteous once they're there.
