Viewing Journal: 8/10/2011

440) THE HELP
(2011 dir. Tate Taylor) Date Seen: August 10 2011

Why does this feel like another lesson in "How White People Solve Racism" (ala MISSISSIPPI BURNING, etc.)

The film has a heart of gold on its sleeve to be sure, but I struggle to embrace its Lifetime channel brand of manufactured spirit. I appreciate the sentiment, but something about it rings false to me. Great ensemble all around & once again Viola Davis is a movie's greatest redeeming facet (see also: DOUBT, EAT PRAY LOVE).

As of now, I'd say she's the best female performance of 2011 for her portrayal of Aibileen Clark.

439) SARAH'S KEY
(2011 dir. Gilles Paquet-Brenner) Date Seen: August 10 2011
