HALLOWEEN HORROR MOVIE QUIZ

aka DR. ANTON PHIBES’ ABOMINABLY ERUDITE, MUSICALLY MALIGNANT, CURSEDLY CLEVER HALLOWEEN HORROR MOVIE QUIZ

another, from the mind of D.Cozzalio.

1) FAVORITE VINCENT PRICE/AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL PICTURES RELEASE

Corman's MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (1964). Nicolas Roeg's cinematography - nightmarishly beautiful (as always). And Price in it is nothing less than iconic.

2) WHAT HORROR CLASSIC (OR NON-CLASSIC) THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN REMADE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE UPGRADED FOR MODERN AUDIENCES?
I'd personally like to see Clive Barker's NIGHTBREED get a big budget HELLBOY-esque facelift. And I have somewhat lofty dreams of being the director who gets to update it. Granted, I'd need to get studio backing and establish more screen cred to even get Clive's permission to redo it.

3) JONATHAN FRID
               OR THAVER DAVID?
the Fridster.

4) NAME ONE HORROR MOVIE YOU NEED TO SEE THAT HAS SO FAR ELUDED YOU

Off the top of my head; I've never seen the BASKET CASE sequels.
also, Wes Craven's SHOCKER (1989).

5) FAVORITE FILM DIRECTOR MOST CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH HORROR
Cronenberg.

6) INGRID PITT
          OR BARBARA STEELE?
Barbara Steele.

7) FAVORITE 50'S
SCI-FI / HORROR CREATURE
Those spinal cord & brain monsters from FIEND WITHOUT A FACE!!

8) FAVORITE/BEST SEQUEL TO AN ESTABLISHED HORROR CLASSIC
Cameron's ALIENS (1986) is immaculate.

9) NAME A SEQUEL IN A HORROR SERIES WHICH CLEARLY SIGNALED THAT THE ONCE-VITAL FRANCHISE HAD RUN OUT OF GAS
FINAL DESTINATION 3 was a letdown to me.

10) JOHN CARRADINE
          OR LON CHANEY JR?
Lon Chaney Jr.

11) WHAT WAS THE LAST HORROR MOVIE YOU SAW IN A THEATER? ON DVD OR BLU-RAY?
Theater: Kevin Smith's RED STATE
At home on dvd: CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI

12) BEST FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FIEND / MONSTER

Guilala from X FROM OUTER SPACE! ('67)
Adorable and hilarious

13) FAVORITE MARIO BAVA?
PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES (1965)

14) FAVORITE HORROR
                ACTOR OR ACTRESS
Christopher Lee.

15) NAME A GREAT HORROR DIRECTOR'S LEAST EFFECTIVE MOVIE

I sort of hate John Carpenter's VAMPIRES ('98)

16) GRAYSON HALL
               OR JOAN BENNETT?
My Joanie.

17) WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU WERE A FAN OF THE HORROR GENRE? & IF YOU'RE NOT, WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOU WEREN'T?
In 6th grade I became obsessed with Romero's DEAD trilogy. Especially DAY OF THE DEAD (1985). The whole survival horror scenario & general bleakness of those films captivated me.

18) FAVORITE BERT I. GORDON (MR. B.I.G.) MOVIE?

THE FOOD OF THE GODS (1976)

19) NAME AN OBSCURE HORROR FAVORITE THAT YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT
This creepy Aussie movie called CELIA ('89).

20) HUMAN CENTIPEDE--
                           YES OR NO?
Yes to the first one.. I can't vouch for the 2nd though. The first one is a genuine oddity and deserves its cult status

21) AND WHILE WE'RE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, IS THERE A HORROR FILM YOU CAN THINK OF THAT YOU FELT "WENT TOO FAR"?
I feel the graphic depictions of rape in I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (1978) and A SERBIAN FILM (2009) go too far. Especially the latter. I don't know where the line is for me, but those two films cross it..

22) NAME A FILM THAT IS TECHNICALLY OUTSIDE OF THE HORROR GENRE THAT YOU MIGHT STILL FEEL COMFORTABLE DESCRIBING AS A HORROR

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (2000)

23) LARA PARKER
    OR KATHRYN LEIGH SCOTT?
Lara!

24) IF YOU'RE A HORROR FAN AT SOME POINT IN YOUR PAST YOUR DAD, GRANDMOTHER, TEACHER OR SOME OTHER DISGUSTED FIGURE OF AUTHORITY PROBABLY WAGGED HER/HIS FINGER AT YOU AND SAID, "WHY DO YOU INSIST ON READING/WATCHING ALL THIS MORBID MONSTER/HORROR JUNK?" HOW DID YOU REPLY? AND IF THAT REPLY FELL SHORT SOMEHOW, HOW WOULD YOU HAVE LIKED TO HAVE REPLIED?
My mother was the one who was always trying to shield me from horror and would get mad when I was always watching them as a teenager. Due to her protective nature all the memories she has of me not being able to sleep as a child because I was scared. "You're filling your mind with all that violence and scary images!" to which I only replied something like "It's not that scary.".. Now I wish I had said "Some of these movies have great resilient characters & are causing me to think long & hard about philosophical questions!" And "they're preparing me for the nightmare of adult life!"

25) NAME THE CRITIC OR WEB SITE YOU MOST ENJOY READING ON THE SUBJECT OF THE HORROR GENRE

Scott Weinberg has exposed me to many horror movies! Plus he writes about them with infectious passion.

26) MOST FRIGHTENING IMAGE YOU'VE EVER TAKEN AWAY FROM A HORROR MOVIE
Those human shaped burn marks on the walls in PULSE (2001).. They cry Hiroshima 💔

27) YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY ASSOCIATED WITH WATCHING A HORROR MOVIE
Watching DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) for the first time with my dad on VHS! 1996 I believe. We had to drive all the way to a Best Buy in Plano to get the only one they had in stock. My dad had fond memories of seeing it during it's original release and he had got me super stoked to see it. I already loved NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) at that point but he knew I would like the 2nd one even more for its more modern setting & action tropes. DAWN did not disappoint!

28) WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT/SIGNIFICANT HORROR MOVIE OF THE PAST 20 YEARS (1992-2012)? WHY?

28 DAYS LATER (2002) for the technical innovation of being shot digital and also for the way it visualized pandemic & civil unrest. It took all of Romero's pet themes & updated them perfectly to the age of terrorism. It felt like I was watching a visceral documentary about the collapse of society and not just another big studio movie. Almost as revolutionary as NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) must have been in its day.

29) FAVORITE DR. PHIBES CURSE (FROM EITHER FILM)

The locusts!

30) YOU ARE PROGRAMMING AN ALL-NIGHT HALLOWEEN HORROR-THON FOR YOUR FAVORITE OLD MOVIE PLACE. WHAT FIVE MOVIES MAKE UP YOUR SCHEDULE?
BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935)

THE ASPHYX (1972)

AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON (1981)

TREMORS (1990)

& THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE (2001)
