Viewing Journal: 6/10/2014

264) GAMBIT
(2014 dir. Michael Hoffman) Date Seen: June 10 2014

263) THE IMMIGRANT
(2014 dir. James Gray) 2nd Viewing: June 10 2014

The most poignant film I've seen on the plight of immigrants since Elia Kazan's AMERICA, AMERICA (1963). Darius Khondji's exquisite lensing of 1920s NYC call to mind the late Gordon Willis. Specifically the Ellis Island bits.. Cotillard, Phoenix, & the entire ensemble are monumental to say the least.

Would make a great thematic triptych with THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (2004) and Crialese's NUOVOMONDO (2006).
