45 "GREAT HORROR MOVIES" QUESTIONNAIRE / QUIZ

Hat tip to KillerPOV for sharing their Facebook horror survey.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

1) SLASHERS OR ZOMBIES?
I think 10 years ago I would have said zombies, but they've reached an absurd level of over-saturation in popular media today. I'll go with good 'ol slashers.

2) WES CRAVEN OR JOHN CARPENTER?
Carpenter's made as many great American masterpieces as Howard Hawks. As much as I love Wes Craven, I don't know if you could ever say that about his entire oeuvre..

3) PERSONAL FAVORITE
                         SCREAM QUEEN
Linda Blair from the late 70s onward. Made me feel like I might "Pazuzu" in my trousers. Mamma mia!

4) DO POLITICS & HORROR MIX?
AB-SO-LUTELY.
Cronenberg's adaptation of Stephen King's THE DEAD ZONE.

5)
FAVORITE FULL MOON PICTURES RELEASE
does TOURIST TRAP (1979) count? That may only be an acquisition of theirs.

6) IS GORE NECESSARY FOR
          A GOOD HORROR FILM?
Not at all. Just look at PULSE (KAIRO), BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, or the original THE HAUNTING. Hell, anything pre-1960s.. Mood is everything.

7) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE OF
        ROMERO'S "DEAD" FILMS?
DAY OF THE DEAD (1985) personally. Though NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) is undeniably the best. [NIGHT might be the greatest horror film ever made]

8) ARE THERE ANY TRENDS IN HORROR YOU DON'T LIKE?
All demonic possessions being depicted the same.. + found footage movies about hauntings. To just name two.

9) ZOMBIES: FAST OR SLOW?
Slow strutting is preferable.

10) IF YOU COULD MEET ANY HORROR
             DIRECTOR, WHO WOULD IT BE?
George A. Romero. The man's work made as big of an impression on my psyche as Spielberg & Disney growing up.

11) FAVORITE FILM
 IN THE ALIEN QUADRILOGY
ALIENS (1986), the second one. I genuinely love every entry in the Alien saga. (AVP movies don't count). I even dug the much-maligned PROMETHEUS (2012). Can't think of another film franchise I can say that about.

12) WHO IS YOUR
               FAVORITE DRACULA?
Bela!!! Bellissimo.

13) CREEPIEST SCENE IN
                ANY HORROR MOVIE
Couldn't just pick one.

  • Infected in the church suddenly sit up & stare - 28 DAYS LATER (2003)
  • Squealing newly formed pod-people - INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978)
  • Count Orlok slowly moving through the doorway - NOSFERATU (1922)
  • Stumbling into the feeding lair / blood pool - THE DESCENT (2005)
  • Lurching female ghost in hallway - PULSE (2001)

14) FAVORITE HORROR REMAKE
John Carpenter's THE THING (1982)

      YOU LIKE TO SEE REMADE?
I don't think anyone's done DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS quite right yet.

16) FAVORITE HORROR FILM YOU THINK
NO ONE ELSE HAS EVER SEEN
I don't think many English speaking viewers have seen THE QUIET FAMILY (1998), Kim Jeewoon's fiendishly dark debut.

17) GREATEST SCREAM QUEEN OF ALL TIME
(not necessarily your personal favorite)
Jamie Lee Curtis. Duh.

18) WHAT MOVIE SCARED YOU MOST AS A CHILD THAT SHOULD BE HORROR?
Walter Murch's RETURN TO OZ (1985)

19) WHAT SCENE IN A HORROR MOVIE

23) FAVORITE TROMA RELEASE
James Gunn's TROMEO & JULIET (1997).

24) DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR HORROR MOVIE YOU ONLY REMEMBER A SCENE OR IMAGE FROM, BUT DON'T REMEMBER THE TITLE OF? IF SO, WHAT IS IT?
I remember seeing part of a movie on TV as a kid where a woman either turned into a giant spider or had a giant tarantula for a pet. It was not in black & white and judging from the clothing style of the characters, I'd say it was from the 80s or late 70s. I remember the spider effects were very scary & real to me; to the point where my child brain thought there really might be giant car sized spiders. I vividly remember a broad daylight shot of a big arachnid walking over farmland hills. And also a part where a scary woman in a basement or attic is covered in webs.. I can't find this movie anywhere for the life of me.
[2020 update: I figured it out watching old movies recently! My memories were merging together 2 different films; THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION (1975) & CURSE OF THE BLACK WIDOW (1977) that were played back-to-back on our old UPN station. Mum says it was during an arachnid themed marathon]

25) FAVORITE MADE-FOR-TV
                   HORROR MOVIE
Carpenter's SOMEONE'S WATCHING ME! ('78).

26) HOW LONG SHOULD
        A HORROR MOVIE LAST?
It's always good to aim for an hour and 20 mins.

27) DO YOU LIKE COMEDY IN
           YOUR HORROR MOVIES?
Indeed I do. Whether it's knowing or unintentional, I just like to laugh.

28) DO YOU MIND HAVING CG
                EFFECTS IN HORROR?
Not at all. I especially appreciate it if it's used to augment already decent practical effects or if it's used in an innovative or stylish way. Practical or computerized, I'm usually very forgiving of FX; as long as the pictures are good + the storytelling is good.

29) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE
           "UNIVERSAL MONSTER"?
Dracula.

30) MOST SHOCKING HORROR MOVIE MEMORY FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD
Philip Kaufman's INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1978). Specifically that ending. My sister and I saw it in elementary school & couldn't sleep afterwards.

31) ARGENTO OR FULCI?
Dario. Goblins. Dario. Goblins. Dario. (infinity).

32) FAVORITE TEXAS CHAINSAW MOVIE
Is this a trick question? Tobe Hooper's original, of course.

33) SHOCKUMENTARIES /
                     MONDO MOVIES?
Not at all.. I don't like to see real human or animal death.

34) WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE
      HORROR MOVIE LAST YEAR?
Rob Zombie's LORDS OF SALEM (2013).

35) DO YOU MIND SHOT-ON-VIDEO
       PSEUDO-REALITY / FOUND FOOTAGE?
No. Especially when it's done well.

36) FAVORITE FOREIGN HORROR MOVIE-PRODUCING COUNTRY?
I used to say Japan but now I'm leaning towards South Korea.

37) DAVID HEDISON OR
   JEFF GOLDBLUM AS THE FLY?
Chef Goldblum.. no competition.

38) IS NUDITY NECESSARY

SHUTTER, I guess.

40) YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY-BASED HORROR MOVIE?
HALLOWEEN (1978) for All Hallow's Eve and GREMLINS (1984) for Christmas.

41) DAVID LYNCH
      OR M. NIGHT SHYMALAN?
I remain a Shyamalan fan, but David Lynch is one of the great American artists of all time.

42) FOR BOOKS MADE INTO MOVIES WHO'S BETTER- STEPHEN KING OR H.P. LOVECRAFT?
Stephen King. Though even half of his don't translate well to screen.

43) ROB ZOMBIE OR ELI ROTH?
Zombizzle.. though I do enjoy some of Eli's stuff.

44) DO YOU LIKE ANY BASED-ON-A-VIDEO GAME  HORROR MOVIES?
I really like RESIDENT EVIL one, two, & five. Other than that; I don't like many video game to screen movies. Based on the original source material, SILENT HILL (2006) should've been the scariest horror film ever made. But it admittedly could've been a lot better.

45) WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HORROR MOVIE OF ALL TIME?
Argento's SUSPIRIA (1977).
