As far as bloated historical epics go, this film's a push/pull war between a buncha dramaturgically wobbly stuff & exhilaratingly Hollywood Movie with a capital M stuff. + pretty to look at one minute-- sickly color-grading the next. So, unless Ridley's unabridged 4hr+ cut improves on those things later, I must proclaim that Gance's 1927 film remains the undisputed pièce de résistance on the subject of the tiny French man.
