50) THE STYLIST
(2021 dir. Jill Gevargizian) Date Seen: January 31 2022

Gevargizian created one sick deranged character & let's just say Najarra Townsend totally understood the assignment. She nailed it.. We caught this on Arrow Video's sweet new streaming platform "Arrow-player", which appears to cater to cult movie enthusiasts. & I could totally see THE STYLIST gaining a cult following in the future, similar to the way Mickey Keating's MAY (2002) eventually did..
For yer health; This movie also features one of my favorite musical scores of 2021. Give it a listen on youtube (Hat tip to Nicholas Elert)

44) NIGHTMARE ALLEY
(2021 dir. Guillermo del Toro) 2nd Viewing: January 28 2022

[Black & White
"VISION IN DARKNESS AND LIGHT" cut]

"& a lot of freaks of nature were put into it.. Used to call them "geeks". A "geek" was a person who was an alcoholic or on drugs. & they put 'em in a cage. & he WAS a wild-man. But they stopped all that in the cities... but the carnival then traveled in the country- & they still had the "geeks". They'd all come pay money to see a man, like an animal in a cage. But, it wasn't done because it was a playground.. You see, some for the first time were amazed; then you remember it was part of the sideshow. But today they got so many "geeks" out there, that they're actually running amongst the public. Not in a cage where they should be.. They're runnin' in the street among us all"

40) WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS' DORMITORY
          [LYCANTHROPUS]
(1961 dir. Paolo Heusch) Date Seen: January 26 2022

This occasionally atmospheric mixed bag came across as an incomplete genre exercise to me. Like perhaps the filmmakers didn’t initially intend on having any real supernatural elements in the story? Everything I can find on the production of the film is in Italian though, so idk. One thing that bugged me at first was the cheap-looking monster makeup that makes the werewolf dude look more like a caveman dude. Fortunately at the 30 minute mark a bunch of crazy Scooby Doo-ish shenanigans start to happen & from there I found it sort of difficult not to be charmed by the movie just a tad. The photography is randomly lush too, in a willfully Gothic “Universal Classic Monsters” sort of way.

Outside of a couple of episodes of Freddy's Nightmares, I believe this is the only thing Robert Englund has done as a director. & it's pretty solid! Clever and playful + would've made the ideal slumber party movie as a teen.

Ok it's not great; but if you watch it following the Golan/Globus "Journey to"
1988 double shit whammy (ALIEN FROM L.A. and JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH), it plays like a vibrant & spunky 2 part Babylon 5 episode.

I wish this had the old Wombles stop-motion animation style from the show. but it was still pretty swell.
