MATTHEW NICHOLS
- Filmmakers did a decent job synthesizing the look & sound of modern true-crime slop
- movie's nicely edited. (during the climax there's neat use of cross-cutting to match location footage from the modern era & the 2001 Hi8 DV)
Too much of a slow trudge through the same old found footage tropes. & Vancouver Island is full of Sasquatch. My man couldn't get a cameo?

THE HOLE IN THE GROUND
(2019 dir. Lee Cronin) Date Seen: April 12 2026
well acted & made with slick precision. + In a narrative sense; the film very much picks up where Corin Hardy's THE HALLOW left off (Not to mention many other "Swapped with an Evil Double" thrillers). So I can't articulate why exactly so much of HOLE IN THE GROUND just rubbed me as a lesser-BABADOOK (2014).. Also, I personally felt the kid was never conceptually quite scary enough when things began to get real

TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN
PARTS 12 - 18
MOMA 85dB theatrical cut
12. CASE FILES
13. WHAT STORY IS THAT, JESSICA?
14. WE CONTAIN MULTITUDES
15. THERE'S SOME FEAR IN LETTING GO
16. NO KNOCK, NO DOORBELL
17. THE PAST DICTATES THE FUTURE
18. WHAT IS YOUR NAME?
Part 17; The distant scream in the woods when Laura suddenly disappears still gives me chills + gets me misty-eyed. The universe suffers when good people are snuffed out

3. CALL FOR HELP
4. …BRINGS BACK SOME MEMORIES
My 2nd watch-thru of season3 as a whole, though technically this is my first time seeing any of "The Return" on the big screen. At home I've seen episodes 2 and 3 probably close to five times now like a proper obsessive weirdo.

HOW TO SHOOT A GHOST
this is the first Kaufman i've been on the fence about. Thankfully it's short subject, because 50% of it is sort of exhausting.

(2025 dir. Paul Feig) Date Seen: March 30 2026How did Feig get good at directing all of a sudden? Did he take a course? There's some really smooth stuff peppered throughout this. Better than your average Yuppies in Trouble Lifetime filler.
132) THE
CHRONOLOGY OF WATER
(2025 dir. Kristen Stewart) 2nd Viewing: March 30 2026K. Stew really did an exceptional job on her debut. With cine-craft that's equal parts Debra Granik and Gus Van Sant.. Also, Imogen was snubbed for Lead Actress.

(2026 dir. Julia Ducournau) Date Seen: March 27 2026Happy to report that Julia continues to disturb & confound in her own unique way. Even if i did feel like this had some pacing issues.. maybe a bit of a drop-off in quality is inevitable after the masterly high of TITANE.
Ms. Farahani is still one of the greatest actresses around.
