Clearly Payne's greatest film since ELECTION 1999 --and a much-needed bounce back from that conceptual misfire with the shrunken Matt Damon.. The whole ensemble is wonderful but this woman named Da'Vine Joy Randolph is revelatory.

I think I sorta get the playful nostalgic vibe the writer/director was going for with this (like LAST ACTION HERO for the wild West), but too much about its execution made it hammy & sloppy. + it seems like the producers replaced a real film camera with an SP video Betacam last minute & just didn't bother to tell anyone. Lots of "Full Moon" Charles Band / Wynorski stuff from around this same time have this same junky look too; Like no one in their world knew how to creatively shoot or light for the limitations of video yet.

This had 2 of the coolest long takes i've ever seen pulled off, & not just in Japanese movies but in all movies. A very funny yakuza farce, where all the adults are idiots and the kids are somehow the only decent people.. buncha little wild anarchists
