455) SUMMERTIME
(1955 dir. David Lean) Date Seen: July 31 2022

Lean's return to color film after exclusively shooting black & white for 10 years. And formally really starting to resemble the director who went on to make all them giant aspect ratio epics.

445) THE BLACK PHONE
(2022 dir. Scott Derrickson) Date Seen: July 26 2022

Ethan Hawke brings out the best in Scott Derrickson yet again.. Also bears mentioning how well this movie evokes a late 1970s look (Something I felt FEAR STREET II did poorly).

Thank God "Prime Time" was on the other end when lil' homie picked up that phong.

443) NOPE
(2022 dir. Jordan Peele) Date Seen: July 24 2022

Well Holy leapin' Lord. Peele just did one for the ages.. Arguably the greatest Western vs Creature feature hybrid since TREMORS (1990).

440) THE GRAY MAN
(2022 dir. Russo bros.) Date Seen: July 22 2022

Speaking of "Gray" men; when is James Gray's new movie coming out?

439) MEN
(2022 dir. Alex Garland) Date Seen: July 21 2022

This is the first Alex Garland helmed thing I've been on the fence about. It has a few very good eerie parts (That bit from his 28 DAYS LATER script where the infected in the church suddenly sit up & stare is visually echoed in a lengthier more stylistic way. **not to mention his fear of silhouettes in tunnels**). Unfortunately the movie contains lots of silly shit too. & about 40% of it just felt like a poor man's REPULSION to me.
Rory Kinnear is tour de force though.

435)
   MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS
(2022 dir. Anthony Fabian) Date Seen: July 17 2022

A little surreal to see Lesley Manville entering the old Angela Lansbury stage of her career.

432) MARCEL
        THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON
(2022 dir. Dean Fleischer-Camp) Date Seen: July 16 2022

the most humanist animated film I've seen probably since Hertzfeldt's WORLD OF TOMORROW (2015)
. So there's that. Also refreshingly optimistic in a pragmatic way.

ALSO ALSO my fat ass thinks Marcel looks like a croissant.

431) THE SADNESS
(2022 dir. Robert Jabbaz) Date Seen: July 16 2022
