Viewing Journal: 6/28/2019

277) ROCKETMAN
(2019 dir. Dexter Fletcher) Date Seen: June 28 2019

Egerton, Elton's tunes, & the musical spectacle of it all kept things engaging for me personally, but the familiar story beats + the uneven emotional execution of a few key scenes admittedly held it back in my heart.. I do need to make a note here that that Troubadour part mad bewitched me, bruv. & other musical scenes like that make it lightyears better than last year's disrespectful Queen thing (which Dexter Fletcher was brought in to try to salvage). So ROCKETMAN's not ALL THAT JAZZ (1979) -- big whoop. Not many films are.. Whaddya want from me.

276) PARIS IS BURNING
(1990 dir. Jennie Livingston) 2nd Viewing: June 28 2019

35mm restoration @ Texas Theatre
It's kinda wild how joyful and heartbreaking this film is at the same time. Beware emotional whiplash. When i first saw it as a teen it didn't hit as hard, but a lot of things have happened since then in the government/s of my country that have been regressive. You go into PARIS IS expecting a mere history doc and you walk out feeling like you've encountered real souls.. Potentially hurt & marginalized souls, that must be protected at all costs.
