440) FJORD
(2026 dir. Cristian Mungiu) Date Seen: October 28 2026
I get why Cannes fell in love with this, though Mungiu has demonstrated enough in the past that he's definitely capable of more. Formally & in a dramatic sense, FJORD stuck me as a slightly less assured THE HUNT by Tomas Vinterberg --with a different accusation setting all the suspicion machinery into motion. The two leads playing the parents are easily the best things here & why I think people should definitely seek out the movie. But where Mads Mikkelsen should have won the 2013 leading role Oscar for the Vinterberg thing (he wasn't even nominated), Sebastian Stan will not only be nominated this year, I bet he wins. & I don't even think audiences in 2026 are all that different than they were in 2013, especially in social sense. I think there's really just not that many original dramas getting produced anymore, & that blows.

438) MATCHBOX THE MOVIE
(2026 dir. Sam Hargrave) Date Seen: October 27 2026
A few fun action scenes aside, there's just no fixing how first draft generic this script is.. & so much of the movie could've been salvaged had they made the overall tone of the thing (& Cena) MACGRUBER-ish.

437) PADAK 파닥파닥
[SWIMMING TO SEA]
(2012 dir. Lee Dae-hee) Date Seen: October 27 2026
Kinda shocked to discover the director is not Vegan.. I also wish it was more consistent in terms of tone & craft, 'cause the movie's very haunting for whole stretches.

435) KLARA AND THE SUN
(2026 dir. Taika Waititi) Date Seen: October 25 2026
Taika's filmography is 50% good and 50% the most grating twee shite ever. & there's really no in between territory & that's crazy to me.

434) KWAIDAN
(1964 dir. Masaki Kobayashi) 4th Viewing: October 25 2026

The greatest horror anthology film ever made in my eyes, & Bava's BLACK SABBATH is a close 2nd!

430) NIMRODS
(2026 dir. Lee Kirk) Date Seen: October 22 2026
Desperately cutesified. Like something Billie Joe, Dirnt, & Tré were contractually obligated to make for their grandkids.. A record label confection that does dumb narrative things to evoke this specific early '90s scene, despite its characters being modern dingus kids. It's kinda depressing to watch GenZeds play make-believe
in this specific way with a musical culture that's sadly long fallen out of fashion too. Sorta makes me wish more filmmakers had taken notes from Alex Ross Perry & many of the inspired choices he made on PAVEMENTS to get the audience into that specific band's headspace.. Beneath all the indie affectation fluff, NIMRODS is through-and-through safe Disney Channel. & I have a genuine affection for those 1991–95 albums —Green Day's "Insomniac" specifically transports me back to early childhood (though how my classic-rock-loving parents were listening to anything from that punk revival era remains a mystery to me)—& this makes the movie's synthetic nostalgia even more irritating, because this should've been way better.. I guess it coulda been way worse though too. 'Cause that CBGB movie exists too.

429) SORORITY ROW
(2009 dir. Stewart Hendler) Date Seen: October 22 2026
shoddy & wholly unnecessary reworking of HOUSE ON, & made all the more lamentable by its arrival in a decade that produced no shortage of genuinely worthwhile horror remakes / reimaginings

425) MUSK
(2026 dir. Alex Gibney) Date Seen: October 18 2026
A decent Gibney doc overall but I still felt like it wasn't harsh enough.. The Musky Tusk, like some unholy amalgam of Brawndo, Henry Ford, & William Randolph Hearst, has such an entrenched PR
mythmaking apparatus in place around him propping up his cult of personality. When it comes to normie audiences, it's gonna take way more than gentle prodding like this to expose the mediocrity of the guy.

423)
YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING
(2026 dir. Fielder/Oppenheim) Date Seen: October 17 2026
I went into this expecting Orson Welles' F FOR FAKE and I feel like that mindset / conceptual lens may have diminished the film a bit for me during the first half. 'Cause by the end
YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING reminded me much more of Herzog. A funnier version of "ecstatic truth". #ForYourConsideration #AmandaSeyfried #SupportingActress2027

422) INVASION
OF THE BODY SNATCHERS
(1956 dir. Don Siegel) 3rd Viewing: October 17 2026
Don Siegel lowkey one of the greatest directors of action; especially when it comes to spatial awareness of scenery & locations. And this movie is still so damn spooky. Coulda swore I remembered the pod-people hissing though like they do in the Kaufman one.
