Lee Daniels' hasn't honed his horror chops quite yet. When paranormal stuff begins to happen in this it's all super pedestrian. Also this movie took a tragic true story rooted in poverty, trauma, and systemic neglect and repackaged it into a lot of goofy spectacle. How come in so many demonic possession films, we're led to believe God just silently watches over as his poorest and mot vulnerable are tormented and thrown to lions. Let's be real; the only real demons here were lack of access to mental healthcare and the racist deliberate dismantling of Gary Indiana's social safety net..

I can forgive a great many things when it comes to stoner comedies—capricious characters, general meandering, & even complete narrative collapse—but ffs I do insist there at least be an occasional laugh.. This one has the peculiar distinction of feeling like it was made entirely for the amusement of the people making it, with the audience invited merely to witness. It's all too lame. steeped in straining for relevance.
