It really didn't occur to me during my first viewing how much this film is indebted to that one scene in NOROI -- with the sleepwalking captured via night vision CCTV (complete with ominous thuds). It's almost like a feature length expansion of that moment, & to surprisingly eerie effect. I also appreciate PARANORMAL ACTIVITY's commitment to the idea that it's supposed to be an authentic piece of found home video footage; with Oren Peli's decisions to remove musical scoring & fancy edits. ノロイ might be a better horror film but it also conceptually had the luxury of being presented as an "after the fact" piece of journalism; complete with all the pseudo-doc dramatics that form allows. Peli's film is more stripped down & raw.
