(2026 dir. Macon Blair) Date Seen: September 9 2026
Macon's 3 films as director are all essentially the same thing in spirit: Ragamuffin, stupid-smart little comedies about broke people stumbling through a declining America so absurdly rigged that being an idiot starts to look like the most reasonable response. Also --is it just me or do the climaxes of all his movies play like humorous riffs on friend & frequent collaborator Jeremy Saulnier's endings?
365) NIGHT OF THE DEMON
(1980 dir. Wasson / Ball) Date Seen: September 9 2026BOGGY CREEK might historically deserve more props for formally doing the Bigfoot pseudo-doc before everyone else, but exploitation like this is cinematically much more my personal speed: Blood-soaked & wonderfully disreputable. Apparently the original director hated all the nudity & extra killings the producer added to the point where he wanted his name changed & pulled from the credits! —which is hilarious, 'cause those parts are the greatest stuff in the movie. If you remove them, NIGHT OF THE DEMON would just play like a slightly more accomplished SNOWBEAST '77 (and that's crumby). Micro-budget attack scenes are genuinely deranged & unintentionally hilarious. Bright red DIY gore segments w/ experimental car alarm "music" that goes on long enough to become slightly surreal. Imagine Herschell Gordon Lewis violence meets the batshit DEVIL STORY '86.. There was even a part where the Sasquatch seemed like he was thirsting for a man's ass before he pounced; & I hope i don't go to hell for laughing at that as hard as I did.
