outside of the uncanny dude playing the "driller killer" part, I found most of this reboot/legacyquel to be a bastardization of the original film. I wish I didn't feel this way because I want to applaud the filmmakers for at least trying to keep that franchise alive.

109) THE BANANA SPLITS MOVIE
(2019 dir. Danishka Esterhazy) Date Seen: February 26 2022
this was more like an adaptation of that Simpsons WESTWORLD (1973)-inspired "Itchy & Scratchy Land" than anything in Five Nights at Freddy's. Also impressively well-made & inventive for having such a low budget. It seems like the only production values the filmmakers had access to were the licensed costumes & the soundstage/studio backlot almost everything takes place at. It was admittedly just a bit too overwritten in the dialogue department for my taste.. For what it's worth I preferred this to last year's WILLY'S WONDERLAND. Now if only someone would make a horror tinged H.R. Pufnstuf

(2022 dir. Kenneth Branagh) Date Seen: February 25 2022
I've always thought trains were inherently more cinematic than boats or any other mode of transport, so I was surprised I ended up enjoying this more than MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS 2017 (Branagh's first Agatha Christie). Aside from having some of the worst green-screen light matching I’ve seen in a mainstream release, I enjoyed the surprisingly old school Hollywood charm this whodunnit was constructed with. I also liked how well it juggled the numerous storylines throughout, creating a handsome tessellation of all the flawed characters by the end. It might be material we've all seen before but it's done up snazzy enough to make for an entertaining night out at the movies.

107) DEATH WISH 4:
THE CRACKDOWN
(1987 dir. J. Lee Thompson) Date Seen: February 25 2022
For my money this is the only entry in the DEATH WISH series that gets really close to being great. All the quasi-fascist stuff is still there bubbling under the surface of course, but on a pure movie escapism level, J. Lee Thompson's filmmaking quality just stands head and shoulders above his predecessor's 👍

I thought RON'S GONE WRONG tackled these same themes more effectively.. Also; while it was stylish & colorful, felt like a major visual departure for Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE II
100) THE WORLD
(1987 dir. Deborah Brock) Date Seen: February 22 2022
Almost as great as the first & possibly even more successful as meta-commentary. Where this one goes a little wrong with me personally is those misplaced rockabilly music video segments. They're intentionally funny but not in a way that tonally complements the rest of the humor in the movie. Like you expect this revamped funnier version of the driller killer (a tour-de-force Atanas Ilitch) to talk smack or maybe do funny one-liners --à la Freddy Krueger-- but when he busts into full-on song & dance numbers that seem to exist in a completely separate universe from the main narrative, it muddles the groove. & the songs aren't good.. I wonder if those parts were contractually shoehorned in by Corman or one of the producers.

When I watch crazy wuxia like this or Hark's ZU WARRIORS at home & it starts firing on all cylinders; I sometimes have a hard time staying near the TV. The choreography, the angles, the edits, & the sound effects rippling outward.. It's all too damn good to where it almost feels like the sensory energy is blasting me away from the screen
