CINEMATIC HOLY MOMENTS: 2021

by Toby

my personal favorite moments from films to receive a 2021 U.S. release. Not all of which made my actual “Best Films of 2021” list, but at least had incredible segments that stayed with me since first viewing. Scenes that I’m sure I’ll want to re-visit again and again. Did I mention I love movies?

+ = was actually featured on Toby's 2021 "Best of"

the floating cadavers go missing from their shackles..
Like a spooky water submerged version of the hide & seek finale of THE VISIT (2015)
     - THE DEEP HOUSE
                 (Bustillo/Maury)

that mechanophilia scene.. deeply troubling while undeniably hypnotic
      - TITANE (Ducournau)
+

the abandoned plaza shootout.. dazzling action served up by the late Benny Chan
    - RAGING FIRE (Chan)

the complex heist to break Trinity out of the Matrix 2.0 + the pursuit that follows -
THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS
                         (Lana Wachowski)

the Cappa siblings last moment with their parents..
M. Night continues to smuggle surprisingly tender moments into genre horror. I love the way the scene is cut & shot too - with the camera drifting to & away from the action like ocean surf
         - OLD (Shyamalan)

King Shark loves the colorful creatures in Starro's tank..
poor guy thought he found a friend
- THE SUICIDE SQUAD (Gunn)

the below-mentioned Duel in all its frenetic glory..
Somehow even better than Scott's own cinematic skirmishes in both GLADIATOR (2000) and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (2005)
    - THE LAST DUEL
                   (Ridley Scott)
+

Brianna summons the title character while in police custody..
Flaws aside, this scene alone makes the movie worthy of its namesake + a solid palate cleanser after forgettable parts 2 & 3
    - CANDYMAN [reboot]
                       (DaCosta)

a very spooky pit stop at Saint Winifred's
**who else wants Lowery to take a stab at horror now?**
THE GREEN KNIGHT (Lowery)

Every appearance of the "three witches"..
All played by the captivating Kathryn Hunter -
THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH
                           (Joel Coen)

Those trippy corridor dreams/nightmares
     - COME TRUE  (A. Scott Burns)
+

Finale mayhem at armored car depot
    - WRATH OF MAN (Ritchie)

Julie stops time..
Fellini-worthy magic realism -
THE WORST PERSON
                    IN THE WORLD
                           (J.Trier)
+

Amin is finally able to be himself at the Rose club
**cue Daft Punk's "Veridis Quo" & cue my tears**
     - FLEE (Rasmussen)
+

The bus fight.. One old man vs 5 troglodytes harassing a young passenger..
 "I'm gonna fuck you up"
      - NOBODY (Naishuller)
+

vision of Jesus on the cross gives title character a paingasm..
an unholy tsunami of sacred-profane
   - BENEDETTA (Verhoeven)
+

The ultraviolent arrival of "Lamb" at police HQ..
Never trust balloon delivery
    - COPSHOP (Carnahan)

The getaway truck runs out of gas..
Paul gets a lot of praise for his dramatic chops but he deserves equal recognition for little funny bits like this
    - LICORICE PIZZA
                   (P.T. Anderson)
+

"What is War?"
Adventure film within a film
- LABYRINTH OF CINEMA
                        (Ôbayashi)
+

Duncan Idaho's dynamic escape during the Harkonnen coup
- DUNE: PART ONE
                     (Villeneuve)
+

that bonkers ecstatic screaming -
RED POST ON
        ESCHER STREET (Sono)
+

"Gabriel" is released on unsuspecting
prisoners & cops at the jailhouse.. It's Frank Henenlotter meets BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99
    - MALIGNANT (Wan)
+

those playful & unexpectedly late opening titles..
- DRIVE MY CAR
                   (Hamaguchi)
+

montage of Baby Annette's early viral success
     - ANNETTE (Carax)
+

all the performances in front of the flickering blue, red, & pink Sun
        - EMA (Larrain)
+

The source of Jessica's mysterious thunder "boom" finally revealed
 - MEMORIA (Weerasethakul)
+

The entire re-imagined prologue number..
just inject that pure movie magic straight into my veins, Señor Spielbergo
- WEST SIDE STORY
                        (Spielberg)
+

also, this batshit scene where "PG" swallows the Paladin King whole
