[old stuff from the now gone "Refined Picture Show" blogspot]

1) FAVORITE QUOTE
                  FROM A FILMMAKER
“A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.”
― Stanley Kubrick

2) A GOOD MOVIE
             FROM A BAD DIRECTOR
STARGATE (1994) via Roland Emmerich

3) FAVORITE
      LAURENCE OLIVIER PERFORMANCE
MARATHON MAN (1976)

4) DESCRIBE A FAMOUS LOCATION FROM A MOVIE THAT YOU HAVE VISITED (BODEGA BAY, CALIFORNIA, WHERE THE ACTION IN THE BIRDS TOOK PLACE, FOR EXAMPLE). WAS IT ANYTHING LIKE THE WAY IT WAS IN THE FILM? WHY OR WHY NOT
The French Quarter in New Orleans. I was sad it wasn't like it is in INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (1994).
It was more how it is in HARD TARGET (1993). Mostly due to the fact that it's not the Victorian era anymore & drug dealers were after me.

5) CARLO PONTI OR DINO DE LAURENTIIS (PRODUCER)?
Carlo any day.

6)
BEST MOVIE ABOUT BASEBALL
John Sayles' EIGHT MEN OUT (1988)

7) FAVORITE
     BARBARA STANWYCK PERFORMANCE
THE FURIES (1950)

8) FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH OR DAZED AND CONFUSED?
Personally, DAZED AND CONFUSED (1993)
 though I love both films.

9) WHAT WAS THE LAST MOVIE YOU SAW, AND WHY?
In theaters it was RATATOUILLE. Because I love Pixar.

At home on dvd it was the Criterion of SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE (1973).

Because I've always wanted to see that movie but I could never find a copy. Thank you Janus for restoring this one. I can see now how big an influence it has been on Guillermo del Toro.

10) WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE ACTUALLY PROCREATED OR NOT, IS THERE A MOVIE YOU CAN THINK OF THAT SERIOUSLY AFFECTED THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT HAVING KIDS OF YOUR OWN?
IN AMERICA (2003)
Because it reminded me how I would not be able to handle the passing away of any of my future children. Even though kids are resilient, grief can effect everyone in the family in profoundly different ways.

11) FAVORITE
    KATHARINE HEPBURN PERFORMANCE
Currently it's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (1962)

12) A BAD MOVIE
          FROM A GOOD DIRECTOR
Cronenberg's M. BUTTERFLY (1993)

13) SALO: THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM-- YES OR NO?
If you had asked me 3 years ago when I first saw the thing I would have said No. But now I've had time to process it and can see its aesthetic value. I still don't think it's one of Pasolini's best movies though.

14) BEN HECHT OR BILLY WILDER (SCREENWRITER)?
Hecht was great but Wilder was on a whole other level.

15) NAME THE FILM FESTIVAL YOU'D MOST WANT TO ATTEND, OR YOUR FAVORITE FESTIVAL THAT YOU ACTUALLY HAVE ATTENDED
I want to go to Cannes just once before I die.

I'm beginning to love our local AFI Dallas.

16) HEAD OR 200 MOTELS?
HEAD (1968) is the only choice.. Zappa's live-action movies kinda suck.

17) FAVORITE CAMEO
                           APPEARANCE
I love Peter Cushing's in TOP SECRET!

18) FAVORITE
       ROSALIND RUSSELL PERFORMANCE
HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940).

19) WHAT MOVIE, EITHER CURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON DVD OR NOT, HAS NEVER RECEIVED THE SPLASHY COLLECTOR'S EDITION TREATMENT YOU THINK IT DESERVES? WHAT WOULD SUCH AN EDITION INCLUDE?
Two. Malick's masterpiece THIN RED LINE (1999),

& it should feature all the deleted footage. Especially all the deleted scenes with Mickey Rourke and Adrian Brody. It should also feature the hard to find documentary on Malick "Rosy-Fingered Dawn" (2002)

I would also like to see Altman's MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER (1971) get a high-def restoration. If a commentary track exists with the late Altman, throw that on there. And pay Warren Beatty loads to do commentary also!

20) NAME A PERFORMANCE EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE REMINDED OF, FOR WHATEVER REASON
Amy Sedaris in the STRANGERS WITH CANDY (2005) movie.
 Because she's hilarious.

21) LOUIS B. MAYER OR HARRY COHN (STUDIO HEAD)?
Mayer!

22) FAVORITE
           JOHN WAYNE PERFORMANCE
SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949)

23) NAKED LUNCH
                    OR BARTON FINK?
I do like Cronenberg's bizarre hodgepodge of William Burroughs' stories a good deal, but I gotta go with BARTON FINK (1991) on this one

24) YOUR RAY HARRYHAUSEN
                     MOVIE OF CHOICE
JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (1963)

25) IS THERE A MOVIE YOU CAN THINK OF THAT YOU FEEL LIKE THE WORLD WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITHOUT, ONE THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN MADE?
things like THE ETERNAL JEW (1940)
racist propaganda that has actually done real world harm

24) FAVORITE DUB TAYLOR PERFORMANCE
I think I've only seen this guy in a bunch of tv shows.. I'm not qualified to answer this one.

25) IF YOU HAD THE CHOICE OF SEEING 3 FINAL MOVIES, TO GO WITH YOUR LAST 3 MEALS, BEFORE SHUFFLING OFF THIS MORTAL COIL, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
That would be as follows; CITY LIGHTS (1931)

DAYS OF HEAVEN (1978)

and finally 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)

26) + WHAT THEATER WOULD YOU CHOOSE TO SEE THEM IN?
Since the Dallas IMAX wouldn't be able to project these films properly the next best thing, as far as brightness & loudness, would be the Cine Capri at Colleyville Harkins
