CINEMATIC HOLY MOMENTS: 1987

by Toby

[re-upload from the now defunct thewanderingimage.tumblr.com]
my personal favorite moments from films to receive a 1987 U.S. release. Not all of which made my actual “Best Films of 1987” list, but at least had incredible segments that stayed with me since first viewing. Scenes that I’m sure I’ll want to re-visit again and again.

+ was actually featured on Toby's 1987 "Best of"
that insanely operatic intro.. Cobra vs. the Joes at Ellis island
**I wish the rest of the movie lived up to the promise of those opening 3 mins**

                          (Jurwich)

Dangling from the bottom of a foggy bridge as a train rolls over

- EMPIRE OF THE SUN
                      (Spielberg)
+
A sniper picks off the men one-by-one.. Abandoned Huế City finale. With the dreary overcast setting + that ambient music, feels more like post-apocalyptic horror than any Vietnam movie. Or Vietnam in a dream
- FULL METAL JACKET (Kubrick)
+
Robocop's entire first night on the beat
   - ROBOCOP (Verhoeven)
+

a first person unseen force chases Ash through every corner of the cabin (Including the crawlspace), then loses track of him. Another great visual gag orchestrated by Raimi
    - EVIL DEAD II (Raimi)
+
Sunrise approaches as vampire Caleb is caught in an empty field. that transition from magic hour to sunrise..
expertly photographed and edited
    - NEAR DARK (Bigelow)
+
Dillon's death sequence. The cloaked hunter circling & closing in.. The way the whole sequence is shot & cut; in multiple frame speeds, Dillon’s arm being severed, etc.. Probably McTiernan’s finest moment as an action director
    - PREDATOR (McTiernan)
+
A slow motion homage to the "Odessa Steps" sequence from BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925). Shootout on Union Station stairwell as a baby carriage rolls down the steps
 - THE UNTOUCHABLES
                          (De Palma)
+
Elderly Puyi gives a tourist boy his cricket jar from childhood
- THE LAST EMPEROR (Bertolucci)
