my personal favorite moments from films to receive a 1991 U.S. release. Not all of which made my actual “Best Films of 1991” list, but at least had incredible segments that stayed with me since first viewing. Scenes that I’m sure I’ll want to re-visit again and again.
- LA FEMME NIKITA (Besson)

Doughboy & gang mow down the Bloods in the mall parking lot.. A lesser filmmaker would've made this moment feel triumphant; instead there's a sad fatalist weight to it, being staged like the earlier slaying of Ricky. The air is too heavy w/the doom of cyclical violence.
- BOYZ N THE HOOD (Singleton)
+
- TERMINATOR 2:
JUDGEMENT DAY (Cameron)
+
- THE RAPTURE (Tolkin)
+
Night-vision sequence in Buffalo Bill’s basement. Really that whole nightmarish climax is horror film gold.
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
(Demme)
+
MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO
(Van Sant)

The youngest "lost boy" recognizes Peter through his aged face & wrinkles. A movie I actually don’t really love all that much, but this sequence has always stuck with me. It’s one of Spielberg & John Williams most spiritual moments together. I wish the rest of the film was worthy of this E.T. quality wonder
- HOOK (Spielberg)
THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
(Demme)
+
- NAKED LUNCH (Cronenberg)
+
- THE VANISHING
[SPOORLOOS] (Sluizer)
+
- THE ROCKETEER (Johnston)
+
- BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
(Trousdale/Wise)
+
The hugging embrace that becomes sudden violence.. One of the more disturbing acts I’ve seen in a dramatic non genre film.
A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY
(Yang)
+
"I’ll Show You the Life of the Mind"
**Dante's Inferno sequence**
- BARTON FINK (Coen bros)
+
The entire Ex-presidents sequence.. the Bank robbery, car chase, gas station fire, & foot pursuit through L.A. backyards
- POINT BREAK (Bigelow)
+
T-1000 in an 18wheeler chasing John Connor through the L.A. floodways on his dirt bike
- TERMINATOR 2:
JUDGEMENT DAY (Cameron)
+
also;Bill & Ted fail at possession
