Failing to see the appeal of this particular brand of quasi-live-action remake Disney continues to push out; Where the original work's narrative bones are left largely intact but the images are disfigured via stylized facelift [in the form of more realistic animations with occasional human performers sprinkled in]. Some of the greatest films ever made are remakes & re-imaginings, i'm specifically beefing with these near-facsimile do-overs, that feel less like adaptation than icky tech revisionism -- Anyone remember Ted Turner’s gross attempts to colorize old black-and-white films? At least some of Disney’s earlier experiments with “live-actionifying” their animated back catalogue treated the originals as just jumping off points (Favreau's 2016 JUNGLE BOOK), while altering whatever film's aesthetics & even POVs sometimes, in ways that gave the remake some reason to exist independently. This new MOANA feels like the endpoint of the opposite philosophy: fidelity pursued so obsessively that bringing the thing back is just replication.. I'm scared Disney might abandon the former approach for good.

Some of the oddest dragon designs & physiologies I've seen this side of the HOW TO TRAIN films.. I also can't believe this came out the same year as their LAST UNICORN movie, because the quality of animation here looked significantly cheaper. But the story & storytelling are still undeniably charming.
